Alternative Residential and Lifestyle Solutions for Older Adults (55+)

 In Blog

All real estate agents are not alike and some, such as myself, specialize in niche markets so they can lend a certain level of expertise.  Hello, my name is Patti Tauber and my niche market is as a Senior Real Estate Specialist.  I’m professionally trained with Masters in Social Work and Certificate in Gerontology from Wayne State University.  And, as a Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES) I completed coursework instilling the knowledge and understanding required to meet the needs of clients over the age of 50.

I have served, for the past 5 years, as a board member at a local non-profit, AGE of Central Texas.  Our mission is “to help adults and their caregivers thrive as they navigate the realities and opportunities of aging and caregiving.”  Our board members serve AGE through collaboration, thoughtful and transparent Stewardship, compassion, innovation, diversity, respect, and ingenuity.

As a Senior Real Estate Specialist in Austin Texas,  I work with older adults (age 55+) looking for alternative residential and lifestyle solutions.  The options I suggest include low maintenance garden/patio homes, active over 55+ lifestyle communities, and retirement and continuing care facilities.  I’ve described each of these community types below with some specific examples in and around Austin.  I am always available to my clients to provide more information and make suggestions based on individual needs.

Garden Homes:

Why hassle with a yard and home maintenance? That’s some of the thinking that has led to an emerging line of maintenance-free homes, interchangeably called patio, courtyard, garden, or village homes. These are single-family detached on small lots with amenities similar to a townhome or condominium, such as yard maintenance provided by the homeowner’s association or a community pool.  One example are the Gardens at Vista Verde in Georgetown, a 149 low maintenance home community nestled in the peaceful Hill Country of Northwest Georgetown, with the blissful freedom of lock and leave convenience, with Modern Hill Country elevations, open concept living areas, and featuring private guest casita (villas), covered patios, volume ceilings with unique accent details (per plan), gourmet kitchens, spa-inspired master bathroom suites, and custom high-end finishes.

Active adults looking to downsize don’t have to sacrifice desirable amenities in active adult communities like Sun City (Georgetown, Texas) and Tuscon Village (Lakeway and Horseshoe Bay). These neighborhoods offer a variety of homes and sizes where residents can enjoy carefree lock and leave lifestyles in the company of like-minded neighbors. Featuring an array of world-class amenities residents enjoy socially-rich events and activities just steps outside their front door.

Another option for a lock and leave lifestyle can also be found in Over 55+ rental communities such as the Overture by Greystar. With 3 locations in the Austin area, gorgeous apartments can be found with resort-style amenities and a range of activities at a monthly fee rate.

Retirement and Care Communities:

Independent Living and Continuing Care Communities (CCRC) can be found in and around the Austin Metropolitan area.  Independent living communities preserve an older adult’s independence and do not provide access to medical and nursing care. Essentially, it is living just like everyone else and having opportunities to make decisions that affect one’s life, with the ability to pursue activities of one’s own choosing. Communities such as Brookdale Gaines Ranch in South Austin, Atria Senior living and Maravilla Domain in the north, and Belmont Village, West Lake offer independent lifestyles at monthly rates.

A continuing care retirement community, sometimes known as a life plan community, is a type of retirement community in the U.S. where a continuum of aging care needs—from independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care—can all be met within the community.  These are facilities where people can continue their accustomed lifestyles and be assured of lifelong health care. The idea is to assure dignity & independent living for people in their later years.  CCRCs can be found in Austin to include, Village at the Triangle, Westminster Village, Longhorn Village. And Buckner Villas.
